Students with learning disability
Such students should get special treatment not only by instructor but also by someone trained in that field and the school should step in. Student with learning disability can frustrate both an instructor and other students since lots of time and attention is spent on them. The solution is that extra hours should be reserved for such students in the form of private tutoring which brings them to the level of the class and avoid frustration in the class. I think the Federal law does not extend special treatment for disabled students after the age of 21. The school should find the means.
I think it is important to know the students limits and get them resources to help them complete their schooling.
The information in this module has been extremely helpful. I have not had the opportunity to deal with this first hand but I feel that it has better prepared me for it if I need it sometime in the future.
I agree with you--that as an instructor we must provide the help ourselves or find resources in the school to assist. Be genuinely encouraging to the student to obtain their goal.
Hi Sebastian! I too, never had the opportunity to work with students with learning disabilities. So you can imagine my "fear" when I had an adult student approach me after my first class of the quarter telling me she had a "learning disability". She had difficulty with spelling tests and recognizing if words were spelled correctly or incorrectly. She also said that she had difficulty grasping all the components of a lecture......trying to listen while writing everything down.(Too bad i didn't have this informative module to refer to three years ago!) We sat together after class and we discussed what worked for her in the past and we both made modifications; she would tape record my lectures and we agreed on a different format to test medical terminology terms, versus identifying what terms were spelled correctly or incorrectly which made up a portion of every med term test I gave. She was thrilled that her instructor cared about her success in the course and she ended up passing with flying colors! If I encounter future students that share a learning disability with me, at least I will have this terrific module to assist me with appropriate accomodations! Heather Marcincin
Hi Heather!
Congratulations on being the type of instruction that is interested - no matter what it takes - to help students be successful. When you have a challenged student communication is the key and then the willingness to make some adjustments to accommodate their needs. Typically, these admustments when used for the entire class, helps everyone.
Keep up the good work!
