I learned that when I am writing a reply to a student's email, it will be more effective if I acknowledge the student's presence, emotion, thought, and concern. This will increase the student's satisfaction with the educational experience.

I have learned from this module that social presence is essential for an instructor of an online course. The instructor should provide frequent, prompt, meaningful feedback to students.

I learned about new forms of plagiarism than what I previously encountered. One is that I learned students can use AI to evade plagiarism-detecting tools.

This is fascinating research that quality faculty-student alliances impact retention rates. In my own college experiences, there was hardly a moment that I encountered faculty members who had a positive or interested approach toward students. It seemed they valued being aloof and disinterested. Perhaps they even thought insulting and disparaging students would motivate them to try harder, and their view of retention responsibility seemed to rest all on the shoulders of the student. How far we have come as an academic community in researching better and evidence-based ways.

I learned that break out rooms can be very effective in getting the students on board with specific material they may be having trouble with. Sometimes students are shy to bring up pain points or even embarrassed. Using a break out room can alleviate some of that stress and make sure the students are caught up on the material.

This module uses the TC model to help design lessons according to students color profiles. For example, students with blue as their primary or secondary color like to help others. They would do well working on a project in which they can communicate with others and work cooperatively. Students with gold personality traits need rules, organization, and deadlines. Students with green personality traits need to be challenged to expand their knowledge. Students with orange personality traits need to work anytime/any place, be creative, and entertained. Getting to know your students personality traits can help the instructor plan assignments and projects… >>>

I learned that incorporating the use of technology in instruction has many benefits. However, the type of technology used as well as the intended use should be examined before it is selected. It should also be evaluated during and after instruction.

How do you use blogs, microblogs, and media-sharing sites to build a sense of community in your online class?

Blog assessments should focus on the quality, relevance, and depth of students’ contributions, rather than simply counting posts or replies. Criteria should match the assignment and course learning outcomes and may include understanding, analysis, reflection, writing quality, and meaningful interaction with others.

Instructors should provide clear guidelines and examples of strong posts. Students should explain and develop their ideas beyond simple agreement or disagreement.

This module helped me reflect on the importance of engaging students both socially and motivationally. I learned that creating an inclusive classroom, encouraging interaction, and connecting course content to real-world situations can help students feel more involved and motivated to learn. I intend to apply these strategies in my environmental science classes by incorporating more interactive activities, encouraging peer discussions, and relating environmental topics to students’ everyday lives and communities. I also want to continue exploring ways to make learning more meaningful and engaging for all students.
