Active learning is important in nursing education because students need to understand how to apply what they learn, not just memorize information for an exam. As a clinical instructor, I have noticed that students learn better when they can practice skills, ask questions, and work through different patient situations. I like using group discussions and hands-on activities because students can share their knowledge and help each other understand difficult concepts.

I plan to continue using patient scenarios, nursing skills demonstrations, and group activities to encourage critical thinking. For example, I can give students a patient situation and have them discuss… >>>

This module helped me understand that online learning can still provide opportunities for students to interact, collaborate, and support one another. I also learned that weekly announcements can help keep students informed about assignments and expectations while encouraging them to take responsibility for their own learning.

There will be times in which an instructor faces pushback from students and/or other members of faculty for practicing Active Learning techniques. From the students' perspectives, they would have likely encountered an educational system in which they were strictly told what to learn and memorize, and active learning is a vastly different approach to that, causing potential confusion and frustrations. But it is up to the teacher to reassure and guide the student that their learning is in their own hands, and the instructor is merely a facilitator of the knowledge.

I feel as though this concept of active learning pairs well with Vygotsky's "Zone of Proximal Development" as the ZPD actualizes the ideal level of support, yet encourages self-sufficiency and exploration within students. Because I do believe there needs to be some catalyst that gives the students a reason to be curious and want to learn, the teacher, but still give them the freedom to navigate their learning and education on their own. And the collaboration with others also helps them gain new perspectives and ideas to add to their educational discoveries.

Synchronous learning is best for an individual student, one-to-one.

Presenting your professional experience and credentials helps to demonstrate professionalism and build rapport with students.

Students need solid support when taking courses online. The instructor should be readily available to support learning needs.

Using different techniques in active learning can keep students engaged.

The instructor should be confident in the material. Critical thinking and active learning are both important skills for students.
