I learned that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can both play an important role in helping adult students succeed. I think connecting assignments to students' personal interests and career goals, while also providing encouragement and positive feedback, can help keep them engaged. In my courses, I try to provide teaching moments and relate various things in the assignment to a real world example.

I learned that giving adult learners more freedom in their learning can help them feel more involved and take responsibility for their progress. I think it's important to find a balance between letting students explore their own ideas and providing enough structure and guidance, especially when teaching some of the technical skills that build on each other.

I learned that creating a welcoming learning environment goes beyond the physical classroom, which is why clear communication, organized materials, and setting expectations early are important in our online environment. Making students feel comfortable when asking questions goes a long way.

Aligning extrinsic and intrinsic motivators is the combination that will make you successful with adult students. If they dont have one of those two motivating factors, they won't be engaged. The two factors have to be approached holistically.

I learned that adult learners are often motivated by a practical goal and also if what they're learning applies to their real-life situations. I think it's important to make the material we teach relevant, rather than just presenting information without context. Adults also bring their own experiences into their learning process, so finding ways to keep the material useful can make a big difference.

The more autonomy an adult student has, the more they feel respected in their learning environment. This drives engagement. The onus is put on the student, and this can help us get the best academic outcomes.

Creating a welcoming environment with clear communication is essential in security. Adults do best when expectations are understood. Once expectations are understood, the value of the class becomes a lot clearer and allows them to trust the classroom environment.

Adult learners are very logical, and grounded. They want to see practical steps, which lead to practical results. They want to understand why things are happening. The sort of "I'm the teacher, and it's like this because I said so" type of teaching doesn't really work and can yield adverse results. Meet adult learners on their level.

Recognize the intrinsic motivators for students and encourage student communication to address their real world questions. This leads to enhanced interest in course and extrinsic motivator to keep pursuing their degree and completing assignments.

Giving students real world situational problems/assignments enhances critical thinking and is more in tune with adult learning.
