Student retention relies and dedication rely on a cohesive faculty

I think students have a tendency to do their work and participate. When it comes to meeting deadlines if all teachers don't hold students to their deadlines other teachers may bare the brunt of unprepared students. In the film and television industry not meeting deadlines gets you fired and that can be interpreted into a classroom setting. I think a lack of retention of knowledge can be related to not meeting deadlines. Thoughts?

Subjective vs Objective

I feel teaching is completely objective rather than subjective to ones experience. I try to use this in my teaching methods. Is this an accurate assumption?

Increasing Intrinsic Motivation

Students in our program are here because they want to be a successful dental hygienist. It is so motivating for me to see them develop their skills as they go through the program. Their intrinsic desire grows along with their confidence levels. Receiving positive feedback from instructors who are passionate about teaching continues to increase their motivation.

Maintaining Pace

Colleague Instructors, How do you maintain the interest of the student who has knowledge of a subset and 'checks out' until a point in the course that will present new information to him/her?

Allowing the Use of Personal Devices During Class

I welcome feedback from colleague Instructor on their approach to students who monitor / use their personal devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) during class. Do you allow use? If so, at which point do you deem use excessive? At that point, what keywords or feedback is given to the offending student? Thanks.

It is help to connect with student to find their interest and apply a learning objective to their interest

Motivating Students

Sometimes it can be hard to movitate a student who just doesn't care, but I always do my best to try anything that might spark an interest in why they enrolled in the first place. I had a student that just felt like quitting. I had a talk with the student and found out why. Once i made some minor adjustments, my student started getting better grades. Felt great!

Empower

I believe that really empowering your students help build their confidence in what they are trying to get out of school. Listing the new skills that they can provide to any employer is what motivates them the do better.

Effective Student Retention

I really enjoying listening to all the different stories each of my students have experienced and then I try to relate what they told me to what we are learning for that day. I also try to relate information to everyday activities so they understand easier

Age Diversity

How to do you deal with two students with a big age difference that are not getting along. Tried having them work together and didn't work.

Autonomy

I really like getting student suggestions of the sequence of asssignments/activities but I am not sure how to handle it when thing get out of hand when studens disagree on the sequence. There always seems to be one student that thinks their way is the is the best way.

Remembering through Relevancy

If the student can apply the concept to a real world situation, even if it is not related to the subject matter, it will help them acquire the skill. I teach my students binary to decimal conversion, which is intimidating to a lot of them. However, we have find a way of using a real world situation (making change with money) to help them grasp on to this concept. Even our most challenging students will get it.

setting the stage for learning

It is really important to be organize with lab settings before class starts..it will gives instructor a piece of mind and the session will going so smooth and not being embarrass in front of students and no room for them to not paying attention to the subject.

Surprise

Your Surprise section helped turn a light bulb on. Adding brain teasing activities at the start of class can warm up the minds of students to prepare them for the lecture coming it. I like the idea of dividing them into groups to solve the problem. A reward could be added as extra points for the day, or letting them go a little earlier than the rest of the class.

Motivation through Support and Resources

I don't spoon feed my students. If they need help, I provide them as many resources as I can.

Evaluation

I always ask the students if they learned something by the end of the course. I need to know if the students are happy and that they feel like they are learning something.

Retention

I give it my all when teaching. While my students work on their projects, I give them my full attention. I also reply to all my emails immediately, so that I don't get backed up and start ignoring them.

expectations

I let my expectations known to the students and they are well aware of the objectives they have to meet by the end of the class.

Instructor's Are Human

It is important to remember that instructors are human and in adult education we are teaching our peers of all ages. I have found that the more "real" I am and relatable to my students, the better my course outcomes are. They need to see us as human and not unreachable so that they are not scared to ask for help or assistance when needed. I believe one of the biggest attributes of a teacher or human being is to be approachable.
