Motivation after low scores

I like your ideas about Maintaining motivation after Low Test scores. I plan on applying a few.

First Day "Getting to Know One Another"

On the first day, I spend a significant amount of time getting the students to mingle. Initially, I have them go around the room and introduce themselves, stating their name, major, and a fun fact about themselves. I will start this by stating these facts about me. Usually, I come up with the most random, entertaining fact I can that will make them laugh. I think getting students to see their instructor as both professional as well as silly can really make them warm up.

Calming A Student Down During Class

Throughout my experience of teaching, I have had some encounters where students vent about frustrations reflecting campus issues. It is important that they feel heard and supported. If their venting begins to disrupt the class, I have found it useful to initially honor their problem by suggesting their claim is valid, but quickly redirecting the focus on how it can be fixed. For instance, if a student begins to complain about the Financial Aid Department, I may explain how helpful the faculty is at handling financial matters, but also include how a mistake may have been made and it can be worked out. I would suggest that they visit the department directly after class. In my words, I also stay optimistic about the problem getting solved. Since instructors make such a meaningful impression on students, it is important for the instructor to promote optimism, calmness, and positivity.

Big Deal of Small Success

The section of Model 2: General Strategies for Student Retention that spoke to me the most as an instructor was: "Making a big deal of a small success will assist in making the big successes even more important to students who are unsure about continuing in school." After going through this section, I now have a conviction of wanting to do better at "make a big deal" of the small successes of the students. These small praises along the way will help the student along being keeping them encouraged…letting them know they can make it.

Topics

I like to select topics that are in the news. So each class period we have section called "In the News", where we talk about current events and how they relate to our current course of study. I have found the sections helps the students understand the importance of what they are learning.

Building a Rapport

I always start class with a short video which discusses topics such as stress, feeling overwhelm, and managing time wisely. The video ends with words of encouragement or tips to help student continue to push forward. By going so, my students feel like they can talk with me openly about the different issues handling them back from being successful at which time we can create a plan together.

Feedback

I have found that student really do appreicated feedback both positive and negative. Therefore, on their assignments that I hand back I always write some type of comment, thus giving them daily feedback.

Listening

I make an effort to listen to questions students ask, and then answer, and give them the knowledge where to find the proper answer to better retain that information.

Difficulties with Adult Learners

I have found as an adult educator the most of my students have difficulties balancing household stressors and continuing the educating. Most of my students are single mothers and need to work in order to take care of their families. So often times they have to choose between school and work. I wonder how other edcuators help to encourage their students in similar situations?
