Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Building a Rapport

I always start class with a short video which discusses topics such as stress, feeling overwhelm, and managing time wisely. The video ends with words of encouragement or tips to help student continue to push forward. By going so, my students feel like they can talk with me openly about the different issues handling them back from being successful at which time we can create a plan together.

Feedback

I have found that student really do appreicated feedback both positive and negative. Therefore, on their assignments that I hand back I always write some type of comment, thus giving them daily feedback.

Listening

I make an effort to listen to questions students ask, and then answer, and give them the knowledge where to find the proper answer to better retain that information.

Difficulties with Adult Learners

I have found as an adult educator the most of my students have difficulties balancing household stressors and continuing the educating. Most of my students are single mothers and need to work in order to take care of their families. So often times they have to choose between school and work. I wonder how other edcuators help to encourage their students in similar situations?

Effective Motivation technics

A good balance in the teaching and deliver effort. This is how instructors should be offered to the students so they will engaged and focussed.

Student Feedback

This is such an important part of instructional improvement we need to know we can adaptor modify our instructional delivery to be even more efective.

U nderstanding Learner Characteristics

I believed that good comunication with the students help me learned there lurning style .

Training of Instructors as Advisors

I'm a little concerned that this unit under-emphasizes the need for training for the Faculty and Staff as it regards advising others. Many instructors in Career Colleges have had very little training in anything other than their core subject matter. Most instructors haven't taken ANY courses in educational theory, learning theory, personal growth theory, or any other kind of theory. We all do our best to help our students based upon our own knowledge and experiences, but not all faculty and staff are qualified in advising others on major life decisions.

Building a Rapport with Students

Building a rapport with my students help them to become more comfortable in the classroom learning environment. I willingly share some of my personal professional experiences with my students, which motivate them, and helps to establish a trust and openness with them. What are some ways you build a rapport with your students? Vernise

Feedback

Today more and more 18-20 olds are entering the career college learning environment. some come directly from the high school environment, and we as instructors must illustrate to them that they can succeed even though they don't possess life experiences, that the nontraditional students and others in the class have. How do you motivate and give feed back to your 18-20 year old students? Vernise

active listening

we have to always be actively listen to our students. this is an excellent way to know where their skills are every MOD.

Student Support Systems

The two support systems such as the internal & external systems, required by students are very important for the success of the students' career goals. The internal support system such as financial, tutoring, instructor's encouragement, content application etc., may be the most reliable to accomplish their goals. Reliability of family and friend may or may not always be consistent and able to meet their needs. Vernise

feeling accepted

Feeling accepted because of rather than in spite of differences may be the key to a successful retention. If a teacher can bring out the benefits of background differences it may put students at ease and allow creativity to flow.

motivating

Being able to motivate students is very important. Instructors who are able to do this will go a long way.

strategies

Students being able to apply what they know personally to learning helps them in the classroom.

Adult Learners

Coming back to school after being out for a while can be difficult. It is important that instructors are passionate about what they are doing so that students can see this and feel it at the same time.

The Get Out of Jail Card

My students love this idea, I got it from a play on Monopoly board game. Simply put when the students have a missing assignment, they can use a "Get out of jail Card" to replace said assignment. They only get one for the entire class.

Motivating Students with Personal Issues

Throughout the years I have been teaching I have had to deal with many students that were faced with challenges. There has been times when I have worked with students that have lost their jobs, loved ones, homes, and students that have been diagnosed with severe medical conditions. During these challenging times I have learned to apply these best practices. 1) Imagine that I was in their position (this helps me put things in to perspective) 2) Reach out to the student to provide extra support 3) Work with administrative staff on the behalf of the student 4) Increased my availability for the student 5) Offer suppoort by listening 6) Search for ways to motivate the student to push them to the finish line

motivation in clinical setting

I will try to apply some of these concepts in the clinical setting that i teach in.

Who is paying the bill?

In many of adult learning, we need to distinguish between two types of customers - the student and the person paying the bill. In some cases, these will be the same person. But in many cases, a parent, grandparent, spouse or some other person will be paying the bill and also should be treated as a customer. In fact, if a parent does not believe the student is getting his money's worth out of the educational experience (for whatever reason), he may pull the cash-flow. So the payor is definitely part of the retention equation.
