Areas of Competency

It's important to be knowledgable of your subject matter and to be fluent in using it. Simply knowing does not make a good instructor. What are some ways to utilize the information of your subject so that the student REALLY wants to learn more about it?

Keeping them engaged

Im a big fan of short lectures. You can see it when they start to drift away. Being long winded is means I'm not keeping up with there needs. I have to step back sometimes.

Being clear

Being very clear on what is going to take place during the class is very important. I don't like to leave anything that can be turned in a differant direction.

Goals

Letting the students know what the expected outcome of a phase is from start to finish gives them a clear view of what they need to do. Its good to remind them. Keep them engaged!

Role Model

To me one of the most important things in teaching is leading by example. Hands down!!!!! There is no way to gain respect and trust with a do as I say not as I do attitude.

Slower students

The main thing I have found with students with reading problems is they don't want anyone to know. when I think they have a problem I will talk to them outside the classroom and let them know that I will make sure they understand what we are covering. It seems to put them at ease.

English!

It is hard for me to relate the meanings of some words to my students that dont have much english skills. I can sometimes look for words or describe a situation that helps them understand

Student groups

Groups don't allways work well with my content or student base. I make sure that I am moving and engaging all students and learning from ther reactions to me how I might could enhance participation in the class

Moving and eye contact

Just the tone of my voice can spark interest and is easy to see. By beeing up beat stron voiced allways positive and happy never fails with getting most of my stundent on the same field as equals almost.

testing

i enjoy creating pretest for my students to form my review before testing

Ways to stimulate

Due to the size of my class room, I have the students sitting in rows behind tables, facing the front. As I lecture, I stand and emphasize points, as I discuss, I wander around the room, and when it is task oriented, the students move to the training area of the class room. I have found that keeping them moving has assisted the learning process. I am going to try some colored papers, etc. and see if that helps.

classroom strategies

what kind of strategies can I used in the classroom if I am teaching clinicals, for example?

Patience

Students that have learning and language difficulties can be a real source of frustration when you have a full class and see that one person is just not able to go at the same speed as others. In my experience the only real solution is additional time... often in one on one sessions or additional tutoring. These students ARE able to learn, it just indeed takes more time.

Language and Learning

It certainly can be difficult when students are learning English as a new language. However, I agree with the the teaching in this course; picking up a few key words of the other language (in my case mostly spanish) and using them occasionally to establish report and also to help with comprehension when English words are difficult is very, very helpful.

Discussion Groups

In my experience, when forming groups it is VERY important to make each group diverse, point out that they are diverse for a reason, and encourage them to get outside of the comfort zone in interacting with people that are different than they are. I remind them if they only allow themselves to hear ideas from people like them, they will be shutting themselves off from a HUGE source of information and experience.

Eye Contact

People definitely say more with their eyes than their mouths and I have found eyes are a very accurate tell about how well a student understands the subject matter.

more time

these students need more time and more methods like using animations, pictures.

respect is important

we should teach the studnts that we should respect people who come from diffrent culture and we should not make joke on them

orginization is important

we try our best to orginize the groups so the students will not feel worse. some time group session effect on the students and their goal

improve your communication skills

empathy is very important try to understand and built a communication with the student
