Lesson Plans that aren't so rigid

There are times, when we have our lesson plan laid out to the minute, and then disaster. As Instructors, we need to be prepaared for these times. If we are not, our credibility can be compromised, and the students most likely are deprived of the total content of the course, which means they have a bad experiendce. This is not acceptable in our profession.

Delivering course content

After taking this course I received a number of fresh ideals that I've forgotton or never knew. Although my teaching style is about 90% of what was taught in this course,it's always good to try new things and reinvent yourself. A student will remember certian instructors by their approach to the class. When you think outside the box it will leave a longer impression, they just might retain the information a bit longer.

testing

In my test questions I stress the things I believe are most important for my students to remember. In my Business of Music class it is more important to understand copyright and publishing more than learning music history.

Instructor Rewards

What do you look forward to has your main reward in your role as an Instructor.

making sure to involve my students

the best way i have found to get them involved is to have they answer my questions. then have them to ask other student questions.

First day of class

From what this course teaches, it goes right along with what we've been doing all along. I don't agree with giving out personal info. as in phone numbers to students, this could open a can of worms that can't be closed.

Testing

On the day before the test, make sure you communicate to your class the subjects to be tested on and other expectations.

Lecture

As an instructor you have to be comfortable with the subject and know all there is to know about because students will test your knowledge on it . So how i do it is i study and look over notes and tests and review myself on entire subject until i know it well.

First Day

I think the first day is the most important day for the students, I let them know what we will be doing the whole course with a daily planner and this sets the pace , then we talk about rules and regs. and how i follow rules everyday and i will set an example for them and continue this from day 1 to day 15 .

Daily planner

I found that a daily planner works well for me because i do the same thing every course and i have become very comfortable with this and i give a handout to class on first day and then i write it on board everyday . this way there are no surprises and the students are very comfortable with this .

Getting my students involved

My biggest goal in class is to get my student involved in class on the first day . I feel that if you break the ice and start asking them simple questions from day one it sets the pace for the entire course.

use tests as reinforcement of what you've taught

I want my students to remember the important things we discuss. My test questions reflect this.

Whole class involvement

It's important not to let the same students answer all the questions. Make sure you call on the entire class to answer questions or add to discussions.

Using DVD's to enhance lessons

I use DVD's from different sources containing interviews with professional music business people. When some of the most successful people in the business tell my students what I have already told them it deffinitely sets the hook.

Developing a syllabus for the coarse content

It helps me break down the coarse content more and have it there more when needed but a fondation to fall back on.

First Day

The first day of a course is my favorite day. I get to meet new students, and try new ways of outlining my course. I also get to hear different questions about my course each time.

Learning styles

Do you find that some of your students are a blend of learning styles rather instead of just one style? By using a varity of presentation styles it will help you to tune into what the best 1st and 2nd choise style that works for each student.

Essay Test

I enjoy essay test because the test introduce students to the importance of writing outside of the english classrooms.

Entrance Exams

These exams are a telltale sign of many learning styles and shortcomings.

Students must read there books in order to pass tests!

I am a chef instructor who has reached an impass with my students and their responsibility in reading their assignments. I have tried to give homework that would make them read the required material, only to have students complain about the homework. When I explained that the test results for this course have been a concern and the best way for them to process information they have read is to write a short paper about it, well you would have thought that I asked them to swim the English Channel in Winter. I have also looked at the exams and developed new exams and though their are some questions that could be construed as a little far and wide of the subject; overall the contact is correct accurate and all covered in the chapters assigned. I have also appealed to the students telling them that the content is very detailed and though we go over content in class using power point presentations, lectures and demonstrations they still need to read assigned chapters in order to pass the tests. Please if any one has any thoughts or ideas, I am all ears. Phil
