Connecting your Instructional Style with your Students' Learning Style

An instructor must realize that an instruction style must adapt to the students' learning style. In this technological age where students learn more on Google and Youtube than they do at accredited universities, I, as an instructor, try to go with the grain, rather than against it. I embrace Google and Youtube when I convey my lesson. Both sources have exceptional and entertaining real-life examples of the coursework outlined in the book and my students seem to truly embrace this technique.

Active Learning

During this course I realized I use the lecture/discussion format in my classroom. I now have more ideas on how to use the small group active learning in my classroom.

Active learning

Getting adult learners involved in their learning is one of the fastest ways to get involvement in the material. Adult learners have usually found in their lives that when applying skills while working is the fastest way to learn and accomplish a task. So why work against this, they usually do not want to sit and memorize information. I have found that teaching these individuals the skills they will need in the field, and practicing these skills will also counteract the learning differences that tend to arise between young and adult learners. this in turn tends to engage the students in a more meaningful manner.

Learning Styles

For my lectures, I usually try incorporating group lessons at the end of an assignment not only to reinforce the lesson, but it allows presentations to be individualized into his/her preferred learning style.

Over load

There are times we have to go over a full chapter in one 6 hour class. how do you keep them focused and not feel to over loaded?

Engaging students of different ages

old school music remixed with some new school rap Get student to write and perform.

Using technology

Incorporating technology into the class room. you-tube has great examples.

Lecturing

The course I teach lends itself to lecture. What are some unique ways to create new interest while lecturing?

Active Learning

Active Learning; me personally I like active learning because I learn the same way. I like using training aids that fit subject matter and put them in the student hands. The students get a better concept of the items of discussing because they get to hold them.

Personal experience

Everyone wants to know your business. keeps their attention and creates relevancy.

Student with disabilities

Having had some students with disabilities, I often tutored that student separately and daily to make sure they are on track. I often used bold lettering and underlining when needed to let them know what is important. The tutoring helped a lot. They also took tests in a different area that was quiet and no other students in the room to reduce distractions. Also, another instructor would read the test to them out loud and they would put their answer down. That help tremendously.

strategies

I like to use as many real-world examples as I can. I feel it helps students retain more.

Groups

I like to have my students pick numbers for group assignments. If I don't, they will pick friends or "the smart student" so they don't have to work as hard and still get a good grade. I want all of the students in the group to contribute so I believe that is the best way to do so.

Teaching Strategies

After having the summer off I felt this review would benefit me greatly before going back into the classroom.

No such thing as a stupid question

I like to show my students that they should feel comfortable enough to ask questions if they don't understand. I like to talk directly to them when answering their question so they don't feel embarassed or nervous. I always tell my students that "there is no such thing as a stupid question, just one not asked." I also try to give real-life experiences to the topic I am talking about and ask them what I could have done differently. I keeps them engaged and they retain the information more.

New ice breakers

I really like to use ice breakers, but I feel as though I'm always using the same ones. Does anyone have examples of ice breakers they have had success with?

How can I be more genuine...

I love motivating, and I love seeing that lightbulb moment, however sometimes I feel like my motivation can be mistaken for sarcasm. I sincerely enjoy teaching and watching students succeed, but I am afraid that my compliments and encouragement are not recieved correctly. I am passionate about my field, and I want my students to have that passion as well. I fear I look lame or cheesy to them. Any tips?
