What worked for me

I been teaching for about five years now abd I have to say that what has been working for me is that I contact my student using what I would say is a combination of the various ways to communicate with my students.  I use email and telephone to reach out to my students.  I do find myself texting a lot more.  I try to common Unisys the east that is best  for the student unless it's really unreasonable.

Hello Sarah,

Good to see your comments here in the discussion!  Haven't chatted with you in awhile.  Maybe we need to catch up one of these days (smile)

Your practice of using a combination of methods to reach students seems effective in that if you try different methods, you'll have more chance of reaching the student, right?  :)

Since I prefer written communication, I have found that I have really enjoyed making outdoor videos for my discussions (by the pool & realxing by a tree) and I have added either a unique photo or cartoon for every student material, discussion, and announcement that I offer to my students.

I will be in Tampa Florida for the Educational Summit, so if you are going, we could certainly catch up then.  Hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Sarah,

Yes! Like you, I have found that I many times will call a student and email a student, and not get a reply. However, if I text, I many times do get a reply.  It is amazing to me the different ways we can use to reach a student, and what method works best for each.

Lauree - I think your idea of making videos is awesome! What an interesting way to engage students! I would love to see one of your examples! Great work!!

Sarah,

I also use a multitude of methods to communicate with my online students.  I email them and post announcements on a weekly basis.  I also utilized email, instant message and text as well as the chat room.  It can be difficult getting in contact with students but we try.  I do feel that some students may feel intimidated when it comes to asking questions or asking for help.  I try to be encouraging when I communicating with them.  I want them to know that I am here to help and that they do not have to wait for office hours to communicate with me.  I encourage them to ask questions as well.  This seems to help.
