When engaging shy students, it is important to continue the conversation once you get the student to open up. Rather than making the progress forward a onetime occurrence, make effort to engage the student on a repeated basis. This will help the student with the present class as well as help the student in future classes. If all instructors are practicing this technique, the student will become a better person as well as a better student.
