Diversity in the Online Classroom

Today's classroom is very different from the classroom I participated in, and yet, there are certain aspects that have not changed, but are easier to identify and address. As instructors, we desire to provide students with a seamless F2F/Online learning experience. This module has made me more aware of generational and technological diversity, as well as the impact that has on the success of our students. Even though most of our students are Millennials or Generation Z, many share common traits with prior generations such as introversion and lack of access to adequate technology (or knowledge of) for online learning. As the global pandemic forces distancing, the level of introversion displayed by students is enhanced by the lack of human contact, internet latency and connectivity issues, and fear of protagonism (even though some would argue the opposite.) Creating an environment that feels secure, friendly and inclusive is key to helping students open up to exploring online course interaction the same way the do with social media. Assessment of your class' overall access to technology in order to select the most accessible tools will also ensure a larger participation and consistency percentage. I plan to make a group assessment program that allows me as an instructor to reach out to students and connect with them on an essential level, taking age, social interaction and access to technology into consideration before delivering the course tools and methods of interaction.

I agree with their argument, technology in a medium that helps them in their learning process. "Creating an environment that feels secure, friendly, and inclusive is key to helping students open up to exploring online course interaction the same way they do with social media." In my experience, the tutoring services (online) the students had the opportunity to interact more with their tutors and the teaching-learning process was extended.
