Introduce your LMS on Day 1

The LMS can be a scary place. Some LMS platforms like Canvas try to be as intuitive as possible. Others might meet all the technical requirements but they are so 1999. As the teacher, there are few suggestions that might work if you are teaching a first year, lower division class.

1. If your school switched LMS, spend time getting acclimated to the platform THEN teach the students. Speaking from personal experience, if everyone is in the same boat, do not show frustration with the new system or compare it negatively to the old system. There is a reason for the switch and highlight the positives.

2. Initially, include instructions where to find everything. Do that for the first few weeks. After that, skip it and spend more time on instruction , discussions, and assessment.

3. Canvas has its own introductory course and many schools require completing this course in addition to its own orientation package. Some schools also have a short, one-unit/one credit long course on information literacy, research methods using its own library database, etc. Talk to the institution to see if they can incorporate learning about the LMS. For tech savvy students, they can take advantage of the more advanced features like Google Drive integration once they are aware of those features. For the less able, they have the minimal competencies.

4. Set clear expectations - who to ask, where to find support, and what you can (or cannot) do for the students.
