7 Things Effective Team Members Do

   

We have the opportunity to talk a lot about team leadership, but what about the team members themselves? What roles should they play in the successful teambuilding process? Below are just a few bullet points that focus on teambuilding from the member's perspective.

Effective team members  

. Clearly understand their team's purpose as well as their own responsibilities

· Participate in team activities and carry their weight (in other words, they do their part)

· Hold themselves personally accountable for results

· Respect the differing talents and personalities around them

· Develop a sense of trust that carries to other team members

· Motivate and support other team members

. Share leadership

Understanding these roles helps us, as managers, develop and empower our team members in their performance and in realizing their career paths.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

Are there any suggestions if there is a teammember that does not hold themselves accountable for their responsibilities ? Or if they are not open to change or enhancment because they provide the requirement.?

All behavior has meaning. What is the reason for the begavior of the  teammember who is not "accountable"? Have we sat down with this person to discuss the "why" behind the behavior? Giving a person a label of "unaccountable" does not really contribute to the "why".....there may be multiple reasons why this person is not "accountable" 

Being responsible is part of a leadership role-just because someone is in a team and not in charge -doesn't make them less a 'leader'- sometimes a good leader must let others excel. Being a good leader and choosing to let others lead is not a bad idea but not participating is a sign that that person needs to learn what a leader must do. I don't excuse it because of being introverted. I don't excuse it for not being the smartest. Assuming the others have good leadership traits, they will help that person move forward, if they really want to. If they choose not to, they lack the skills needed to be a 'team' member.

Great team member guidelines.  I think many employees never get past the first 2.  It takes time for teachers to see that they are doing more than dishing out information--they are shaping work ethics and modeling company values.  The employee/instructor who just comes in and puts their time in really would benefit from intervention to keep them fresh and invested in their career.
