I do believe in the benefits of establishing thorough communication in my online courses. I never want my students to guess or assume things when it comes to online courses. Establishing forms of communication in my syllabus, welcome email, and my first discussion post helps to make the students aware of what I expect from them.The instructor should also be clear about his/her practices for responding to discussion board questions and/or emails, so students will know what to expect. Being as interactive as possible increases the chances of a very interactive discusssion throughout the course. Building an online interactive environment through communication involves using a variety of technology communication tools. Such tools, including email, discussion boards, text messaging, etc., may take some time for students and instructors to learn.
