Teaching Online

I thought the class offered a lot of helpful tips to engage students. I teach at a few online schools and it was a good reminder of different things I could be doing in the classroom. I like the analogy that we as online facilitators are directors.

In my on ground classes, I tend to use power point, but within my power point we stop and have discussion questions as well as activities so it breaks the information up. In my online classes, I provide videos and journal articles and ask the students to reflect on their reaction. I also do group projects. I think in an online setting students are responsible more for their learning and what they get out of the classroom, we are their to guide them and ask though provoking questions.

In my online classes I plan on using more case studies, simulations, debates and other forms of technology to engage students.

I have never taught an online class, but after taking this course it has openied my eyes to the possibilities of joining the thusands of other teachers in this "asychronous" way of instruction.  I love the benefits of student or learner centered learning that can happen anywhere or at anytime.  I sincerely have to give it saome serious thought.  Thanks again for peer support.

I have taught both ground and online classes as well. I thought there were some interesting things in this module. Online students really do need to establish a sense of belonging and become part of the online community. It is difficult to get that same classroom atmosphere when there is no face to face content. Students come from all over the country and have such diverse abilities and background knowledge. Communication on the discussion board is crucial for them to connect with each other. I teach remedial reading and writing so my students are very low. They improve at different rates and with varying amounts of encouragement needed by me. I look forward to teaching more online courses in the future.
