Engaging Diverse Students

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I intend to use what I have learned to provide more opportunities for my students.

The medical laboratory technician program at JCTC always has a very diverse group of students, and the current cohort is no exception. I have always encouraged students to share about their experiences in their country of origin because other students have so many misconceptions.  I also many of my international students have misconceptions about the US.  There are multiple topics we discuss that an international perspective is so helpful and why it impacts patients in the United States. I can already see where I can utilize accessing prior knowledge to improve my teaching technique in class.

Graphic Design and Communication Arts come with a mandate that knowing and understanding your audience as a designer is an important part of what we do. To me, this training directly supports that goal. I also see opportunities in working with clients that are located around the world and understanding the challenges that come from that.

Strategies on how to begin globalizing a course.

I thought I had a well diverse culinary class because we was use recipes from different countries, but now I am going to start inviting chefs from different cultural, racial and gender backgrounds to speak or lead a cooking session. I will make sure that I am not just teaching the cuisine but also the context of the food. I want to go deeper into the origins of the dishes -  touch on colonialism, migration, socio-political forces or indigenous traditions when appropriate.

I also use an introductory exercise to assess what prior knowledge student's bring to class, but will further evaluate the tools provided to expand this.  I found the example exercises under the various domains specific to my career area very helpful and will use some of these in class and share with my colleagues.

I currently use a student survey to gain knowledge about their previous content mastery, but I can see how including personal background info is helpful. We discuss in class, but not in online versions of the course.

I found the "Global Leadership Performance Outcomes" rubric interesting. It provided a framework for understanding if a student is emerging, developing, proficient or advanced for particular outcomes. For example, the rubric provides and understanding if a student demonstrates a clear and accurate understanding of other people, groups and scholars. This is similar to an outcome I have for my Global Business course and now I have a rubric to help in understanding whether the student achieved this outcome or not.

This seems like DEI training which is being discontinued across the nation.

The information and examples I learned helped me to understand why students having diverse backgrounds is important. The core skills is what will make the students ready for the global stage.

What I've learned from this course is that this helps our students with different backgrounds have an understanding of what the workforce can be like and show that there are opportunities everywhere if you put your mind to it. With all the resources we have, we can help our students develop and have equal opportunities just like the next person.

This engaging diverse students module provided me with valuable insights into the importance of creating inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environments for students from various backgrounds. I learned that understanding students' unique experiences, cultures, and learning styles can significantly enhance classroom participation and academic success. Moving forward, I plan to apply these strategies by incorporating culturally responsive teaching practices, fostering open communication, and using diverse instructional methods to meet the needs of all learners. Additionally, I will prioritize building strong relationships with students to create a sense of belonging and support their growth both academically and personally.

Culture plays a vital role in shaping our identities, and understanding your students' cultural backgrounds is a meaningful way to foster a sense of community in the classroom.

I learned that engaging not just some, but all students is crucial. All students should feel equally welcome and seen.

From this module, I learned the importance of understanding diverse student experiences and integrating global social justice education into my teaching. I now see how scaffolding learning in global competence can help students engage with different perspectives and develop critical thinking skills. Moving forward, I intend to apply this by incorporating diverse case studies, encouraging discussions on global issues, and creating inclusive learning environments that support all students.

I learned how to be sensitive to the students where there are in their awareness of global citizenship and how to guide them into reflecting on their previous knowledge and anchoring new knowledge to it to assist them in exploring new ideas and helping them develop into more open global citizens.

I have learned that by engaging with diverse students, you can learn to see the world from multiple and a variety of perspectives, develop critical thinking skills, cultivate empathy, gain cultural understanding, and become more open-minded to the needs of students. Additionally, we are capable of learning to better understand and appreciate different experiences and viewpoints, leading to richer learning and personal growth.

I think the module underscores the importance of first understanding the culture of the people by collecting data and analyzing it before embarking on any project or getting into any industry for business purposes. That is definitely one best practice that students who would want to get into global business need too understand.

This module helped me to learn valuable learning tools
