How to set up online learning to be effective for the student, to keep his or her interest and keep it orginized as they develop their on line learning.

To be a competent online instructor, I must have an understanding of the learning management system used by my institution. At UNLV, we use Canvas, and at previous institutions, I have used moodle. My goal is to provide both learning and when appropriate, technical support for my students. I must set up course objectives that follow scaffold learning, and that makes learning interactive.

To ensure success through courses, course goals should be identified. It is of key importance to communicate guidelines and expectations to students. I've recently, started adding specific due dates to assignments instead of open ended.

I learned and re-inforced that learning the stucture of the lessons and knowing what is going to happen ahead of when students receive the information to the module is key. " Flying by the seat of my pants" is not an option. I also beleive that as an instructure I need to make every effort to interact with the students and be avaliable for them when I am needed. I took online coarses many, many, (many) years ago. It is amazing and encouraging how much it has advanched and the number of opportunities are almost endless.

Students want to know they will get the support they need to complete the course

A variety of instruction techniques are necessary for effective on line instruction.

I have been using a CMS in my classes for many years, so, as I read through the information, I tried to stop and think, "Do I know how to do that?" with the system that I use. One thing I will try to do better is add a very formal "How to use it" lesson during the first few days of each semester. And also give a "homework" assignment to make sure they can use it at home and as a record for me that they can.

Teachers are given a common goal (something specific they need to teach), but we all teach in different ways.

I have found that online learning can be overwhelming to do well

Conducting classes online/virtually is different than in person.  As an instructor I must learn to adapt and be able to guide my students.

It is imperative to understand how to navigate the CMS in its entirety. Ensuring a thorough orientation for the student with the CMS will assist the student to work confidently and more efficiently while reducing unnecessary calls and emails to instructors and IT departments.

Good course delivery formats should leverage multimedia. This also means that instructions must ensure that all students have access to the materials and are not locked out due to hardware restrictions or not understanding how to navigate the CMS. Instructors must be able to understand and use CMS functions such as learner rosters, post announcements, discussions, and moderate chatrooms.

Make sure I learn how the navigate the system before making assignments for the students. Students might have some challenges using an online platform but tec\acher should make sure they understand how to navigate system. A CMS allows teachers to organize groups and group chats for assignments, develop course roster and input course grades.

I will make sure to review all content of the Module so I can easily and expertly answer my students questions about the course

I have been taking online classes before, so I am familiar with the structure of an online course from the student perspective. I found this module very interesting, I learned that there are many aspects that an online instructor have to have in consideration such as provide resources for technical support, and be aware of the student's needs and strengths in technology.

It's extremely important that you know how to navigate through the CMS entirely. Your students depend on you! You want to be able to assist them whenever they have an issue. You also want to make sure there is plenty of communication so that students know what to expect.

to be familiar with online CMS and be able to navigate through course effiectivly

In order to be successful with e-learning an instructor must be familiar with the platform in which they are using. Instructors should provide instruction and technical support. In addition, it its important to be family with techniques and stategies. The module and lessson framework seems to be most beneficial to students for easy navigation.

I have learned that if the instructor is confident in helping the student whether it be with course work or navigating the course the students are more at ease with online learning.

That this program will require even more one on one instruction in order for my ESL and ABE learners to navigate using a web based program instructed format. I'm hopefully that it will be an easy challenge for them to navigate and get used to in order to help further their education.
