The Most Effective Instructor: Scholar and Facilitator --> Introduction to Becoming an Effective Instructor

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

Finding ways to keep all students engaged is key to the retention of students and their engagement.

I agree with the fact that students need to activel participate in their learning.

Varying the methods of instruction and facilitation will keep learners engaged.  Additionally since different students learn best in different ways; by presenting the same material in a variety of learning styles should have greater success as a whole.

I was lucky when I first began working as an adjunct, because in my graduate program, I was given composition and pedagogy courses. So I had the opportunity to learn how to how to facilitate GE classrooms, but it's very different in a specialized or trade school. I had to pivot my approach to the facilitation of the class, since had a different set of priorities.

I found it interesting and somewhat comforting that all the fears I have about being more than just a scholar, and being a good facilitator are all normal. I enjoyed the comparison to being a coach as Vet med is very much a team sport. It was nice working on a module I could relate too.

I found it somewhat comforting to know that I am not the only one that has concerns with limitations of time or scope of complexity of information when it comes to different learning styles. I feel that having more than one technique is critical to be able to reach students. I remember being a student and maybe not grasping a concept from instruction, then becoming competent in that concept and thinking "oh, why didn't they just say this..." I feel this will help me  to be able to connect with all the different types of learners.

Being a scholar for many years and transitioning to become a good facilitator or coach helped me utilize the "sage on stage"/old-school method. Learning the personalities and learning disciplines of my scholars provided different strategies for helping my scholars become effective learners by instructing the content using ideas based on their personality or learning style.

Walking around during class sessions is important, to get to be familiar with each one of your students. Using games to practice the lesson learned is fun and student learns successfully.

Finding different way of teaching will help any schooler become a better facilitater

The Most Effective instructor is TO be someone who embodies both the qualities of a "scholar" with a deep knowledge base in their field and a "facilitator" who actively engages students in the learning process, fostering critical thinking and meaningful discussion.

I will try to conduct class through discussion based approach rather than just delivering the lecture , presenting the ppt, and showing youtube videos on the subject matter. Hopefully this will lead to active and meaningful involvement.

I also plan on self reflecting by reviewing at least one session recording / week so I can plan the next class accordingly.

Comment on Janet Kennedy's post:

Incorporating different teaching methodologies such as lecture, flipped classroom, role play, quizzes from Kahoot/jeopardy platform for active participation and engagement of the learners.

I can use fun ways to help the students learn the content.

I learned not to be afraid to facilitate and to expand my teaching into new methods.

The content curriculum is so packed with our program- need to find ways to streamline this to incorporate these facilitation methods as time is short and material is copious and dense.

Be present motivated walk the room instead of staying in front of the class the entire time to engage the shy students in back to feel more comfortable and more likely to speak up and ensures everyone is understanding the concept you are relaying.

Do not be afraid to facilitate and expand new ways to teach . Ask students to participate in the learning process.

sage on a stage felt very comfortable due to being the authority, which can misguide students if the information provided is incorrect. A more interactive process allows both to grow and learn
