Working with students who have terrible things going on outside of school is a regular thing for me. I find that I often end up being that one adult that the student either confides in or respects. I have learned that holding students accountable and dealing with them in a kind and fair way is the only way to turn around that student's behavior. Letting bad behavior go because of knowledge of a bad situation does a huge disservice to that student. Most students eventually figure out that a caring teacher is one who also gives clear expectations that include both reward and consequence.
