This is such a great question because it is becoming such a common problem in the classroom. I am really torn on this subject. On one hand, our job is to make sure they understand the subject matter and it is possible for the student to show that comprehension even though the grammar is bad. On the other hand, we are also responsible for making sure they can present themselves in a manner that is clear and bad grammar and spelling doesn't really prepare them for the working world. I wish I knew the answer. As you said, it is a delicate balance.
