The course content has to be engaging so as not to cause the student(s) to feel isolated and/or frustrated. It is important to use a variety of media to keep the student engaged. Integrating critical thinking questions afford the student the ability to apply the knowledge they've gained. And, lastly, don't discount the impact of guest lecturers in an asynchronous learning environment. If selected appropriately to the content being delivered, they help to reinforce the material and provide the student insight into real-world applications.
