This module taught me that students learn in different ways and that learning disabilities do not reflect a student's intelligence or potential. I learned that students with dyslexia may struggle with reading, spelling, and processing written information, while students with dyscalculia may have difficulty understanding numbers, math concepts, and calculations. Students with ADD or ADHD may experience challenges with attention, focus, organization, time management, and impulse control.
I learned that effective teaching strategies can help these students succeed. These strategies include providing clear instructions, breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visual aids and hands-on activities, allowing extra time when needed, providing audiobooks or text-to-speech technology, using graphic organizers, and offering frequent feedback and encouragement. I also learned the importance of accommodations outlined in IEPs and 504 Plans to ensure students have equitable access to learning.
I will apply this knowledge by using a variety of teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs, providing accommodations when required, monitoring student progress, and creating an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel supported and capable of success. By being flexible and responsive to individual needs, I can help every student achieve their learning goals and develop confidence in their abilities.
