This module taught me the importance of providing accommodations that allow students with physical or sensory disabilities to fully access instruction, participate in classroom activities, and demonstrate their learning. I learned that accommodations do not change the learning objectives but instead remove barriers that may prevent students from successfully engaging in the curriculum.
Examples of accommodations may include preferential seating, extended time on assignments and tests, assistive technology, audiobooks or text-to-speech software, enlarged print materials, captioned videos, accessible classroom layouts, and alternative methods for completing assignments.
I also learned that it is my legal responsibility to implement the accommodations outlined in a student's IEP or 504 Plan and to work collaboratively with special education staff, administrators, parents, and students to ensure their needs are met.
I will apply this knowledge by creating an accessible classroom environment, providing required accommodations consistently, using multiple instructional strategies, and ensuring that all students have an equal opportunity to participate, learn, and succeed in my Health Science classroom.
