The pen is mightier than the smile
I tried the pen in the mouth smile, the pen won but, it was funny and I smiled. I will recreate this in class with my students. :)
students are very tuned into their returned paperwork, so I make an effort to write compliments on papers that have improved since last time - with a "great job" or "Wonderful improvement!" note - just for them, or even a sticker! Seems to go a long way, especially for folks who are more shy and don't speak up in class who still do good work.

great idea. Too often we just write the number wrong and the grade. There is much value in the way do this.
