It is important to remember what keeps you motivated and what obstacles you have overcome or try to put yourself in the student's situation. They need to be encouraged to work through the issues and not allowed to use them as excuses to give up.

It is important to do periodic empathy checks to make sure that we don't become too jaded. Have you thought about doing something like this at a departmental meeting or in-service session? It may be a good way to engage people who aren't inclined to do this themselves.
