Student mentoring programs

;-) Don't you think that even with a mentoring program, some students find it difficult to "fit into the main stream' of the academic envirnonment?

Yes, learning occurs whenever students are actively involved in stimulating experiences on their level of ability. Some students may have barriers to success and this will prevent them to "fit into the main stream" of the academic
environment. This could be classfied as incompatibility with the program and/or people.
Career choice change needed.

If that is true, what are the implications for your school? Do you handle these students differently? What are your responsibilities to them? If mentoring isn't effective, what other methods would be appropriate to address their needs?

Eva, is there any way to identify those barriers before the student starts the program? It is important that everyone in the process from prospective student to admissions to faculty understand that there is a reasonable expectation that the student is willing and able to accept the responsibilities that will lead to graduation.
