I will work this summer to integrate WBL experiences into the required course work as I build my lesson plans for the coming year. I will be intentional in providing multiple entry points & flexible formats - in-school, virtual & community based. As well as build partnerships with local business & organizations to expand their opportunities.
Comment on Brady Brooks's post: I have 7-12 so utilizing different learning styles as well as engaging them to discover their interests has been a challenge. But as the year draws to an end, I am seeing the engagement increase as well as their eagerness to learn more.
This module reinforced the importance of intentionally designing a full continuum of work-based learning experiences rather than relying on isolated opportunities. I’ve learned that access and progression must be built into the program so every student moves from awareness to real-world application. Moving forward, I plan to be more deliberate in tracking student participation across each level and ensuring barriers like scheduling or confidence don’t limit access. I also want to strengthen reflection at each stage so students better understand their skills and career fit. Overall, I will apply this by creating a more structured, equitable system that guarantees meaningful, hands-on experiences for all students.
We have some gaps in our district WBL continuum. For example, we have a very robust WBL program in the middle school level, but nothing available for students in the 9/10 grade levels. Then, they are able to take WBL classes in their 11/12 grade years. So, I think we need to keep pressing into the 9/10 grade levels. A WBL data base for the district is an amazing idea and one I'd like to further explore.
I itend to utizilize the continuum to include younger studnets and to build a strong foundation for skills and knowledge.
Support all students, means all students. CTE needs to be a K-12 purposeful, driven curriculum that impacts and benefits every student.
Support all students, including those with disabilities, those living in rural areas, students who have little financial resources and students who do not have access to employers and professionals who are not on board with WBL.
I think that it is important that our school tries to get some of the younger grades more involved in career awareness experience and in CTE programs in general. The earlier we can do this, the better understanding they will have of their opportunities.
We utilize various activities that are cited in the best practices, but one idea I would like to spend more time on is having students partner with industry to solve an industry issue. Activities like this truly encapsulate what students would be experiencing when working in industry and this is an important method of allowing students to experience whether this specific industry aligns with their interests and meets their expectations of what a career in this field could look like.
We already help support the continuum by entrenching it in our CTE curriculum. However the district also embeds supports to ensure all students have access such as paying for any certifications required, busing students, ensure schedules are aligned to hosting WBL opportunities during the scheduled school day.
