a leader needs to know what needs to be done and know the people that can get it done by encouragement and participation.

I think that you hit it on the head with the comment and thanks for the response. The question stems from what makes you a good leader and how do you continue to improve on your skills.

A leader should know how to lead without fear,

Delegating tasks to the most capable individuals is effective, but knowing when to encourage others to step up to the plate and "get things done" is another sign of leadership. Encouragement and active participation are only a fraction of leadership skills.

A leader needs to set the example for his or her staff to follow.
