The role of the Rubric

The role of the rubric is to properly assess how a person has done. It should clearly define the expectations and also any potential deficiencies that may be there. It is like an evaluation of the work. It is important that the rubric be known in advance of completing the work so that the expectations are clearly defined and specific.

Sharon,

I like the word "properly" in your explanation of properly assessing students' work. The rubric must be carefully designed to do that proper assessment. Thanks!

Sharon, Rubricsm as they are used in the online environment, are a valuable tool that enables both the instructor and student to follow a general outline that allows for the greatest opportunity for the student to display a variety of creative and intellectual skills within a predetermined structure.

Joseph and Sharon,

Right on! They are beneficial for both audiences. I like the use of your term "predetermined structure." Nice job.
