Where to begin??

I have taught online for several years now and have been asked to develop a comprehensive exam for a master's program. This alone is a daunting task, but you develop a whole course is where I aspire to go with it. I feel there is just so much that can be discussed in a criminal law class for example that I don't know where to even begin. Do any of you have thoughts on how to narrow the topics to start developing course materials?

Most students can relate to current events. You might want to start there.

I agree with the current event suggestion. A high-profile current case may be a great starting point for an online discussion, for instance. Following the case through the course should be a perfect example of how a case may be tried (or not) and reasons for the final judgement.

Starting with an actual 'client' might also be a good starting point. For example, following the 'clint/suspect' from their entry into the CJ system until their conlclusion/disposition and discussing points along the way. This might also help add some practicability to the class.
