We see this so often here in culinary school. Service learning has become very popular here for the added benefit of networking.

I would estimate that half the job offers our students receive are a direct result of service learning.

The benefits the students could reap include: a direct "tie-in" of their field of study to real-life work experience, an opportunity to net-work with potential future employers and of utmost importance; the challenge to use their intellectual skills in critical thinking and problem solving.

Definitely gaining real life experience and seeing how beneficial their skills are in helping other people. It also gives them the chance to see how successful they can be just by reaching out to others.

Application of skills and a greater appreciation for the community in which they live

Employers are beginning to look for service learning activites on resume's. It does put the name of the school out there into the community as well. I like to see that the students are challenged to give something back and apply their learning to a situation. It also helps them see that sometimes there are no "easy" answers!
