Blogs can require a password if you would like to restrict access. Sites created specifically for education such as Edmodo (https://www.edmodo.com/) give you the option to restrict access.

That's great to know and good information. I am considering creating a chef's blog on French cuisine and although I wouldn't care to restrict anyone access, I would like to know how one would advertise it or get the word out about it's existence. Thanks.

I thought blogs were open to the general public too. This would be a great tool to get feedback from my students while they're on externship. It will be an informal yet informative way to find out how they are doing once they leave the classroom.
