Dependent or Self-Directed Learner

What does it take to be a Self-directed Learner?
My thoughts:
- Believe in yourself
- Compare yourself to your potential
- Seek wisdom for the rest of your life
- Embrace change
- Choose your friends wisely

Robert,
Ahhhh.....very well stated! I cannot even select my favorite one!

Robert,
Additonally, for adult learners, self directed learning requires that what is being learned have some relevancy to the learner's desired learning outcomes or prior learning.

I think it also takes Self-motivation that goes beyond believing yourself to be able to do it, but actually finding the time to do the tasks!

To be self- directed you must be self-motivated and be able to turn off your favorite tv show to study, or miss a friend's party for class, priorities must be in line for learning!

Sherri,
self-motivation and time management. We are all so busy that we must learn how to manage all the "fires" we are in.

I believe from what I view each day from my students is, most are dependent and aren't pushed to be self motivated. The lack of desire to do "better" than average, is a factory I run into every class rotation. Having to push the student a little can help them become self motivated, but it is something that takes time and reinforecment.

Jesse,
Self motivation is an aspect that is missing a lot in our society.
