have them to do activities in class so that they can motivated and awake to learn
you have to keep telling them about the big picture, when school is done and if you put a great deal of effort into your school work, when its time to get a job, you will be in greater demand than someone that just squeeked by. its all about the $$$.

Sometimes it is hard to see the end. The more practice and preparation is stressed now, the better off they will be in the end.

For most of the students it is about the here and now. You see that in the way that they set priorites a good time now verses working hard to get a good grade. That starts early in their lives and it can be hard to get them to see the other side.
