Seeing the Big Picture

I think that it is so important to keep the students focused on the big picture and why they are here. Going back to personal stories and or experiences lets the students share their experiences in life whether it relates to the current field choice or not. It will keep them motivated to keep on going and realize that everything they have learned in life does actually apply to their current field because it has led to this decision of choosing a new career path.

I agree. You can also take students out on field trips relating to their current field so they can actually see the big picture and get some feedback on those already in the field.

+1 to both of you. The "why" of the coursework is critical and by using examples and showing them what it means to be in the field builds buy-in and retention.

Teaching your students to see the big picture of there success is very important. One must include situation that can be related to there students. Include hobbies and likeness to reach or student and strive to make the over all picture reachable.
