Reinforcing concepts in the class
Using contemporary media examples (such as films and commercials) allow me to reinforce concepts within a familiar platform. This helps students retain course concepts as they start to recognize the active role of these concepts as they are demonstrated in popular forms.
It's all about making connectiions and being aware of many different areas that can converge:
this opushes the concept and application of retention.

Concepts are very hard for students to grasp. I find it essential that I link the lesson concepts that I am teaching to something tangible or an experience that a student can relate to, this makes the connection between the lesson being taught and the reality of that lesson.

Well said. In order for real application of concepts to be made there has to be understanding, relevancy and application. When you use these three the concepts will be embedded in the minds and skills of your students.
