Teacher-student learning-based relationships with students having disabilities

Working with students with disabilities has a number of benefits for the instructor as well as for the student. The student gains competency and confidence in his/her progress, and the instructor gains the appreciation of that student for the individual attention as well as a feeling of having helped a motivated individual dealing with a life-long challenge strive toward a satisfying career goal.

I agree. I believe that working with a variety of individuals, learning styles, and abilities reminds us that a "one-size fits all" approach is not effective. Regardless of the class, instructors should strive to reach each student and each type of learning style. Some times students just need support or someone to believe in them when they do not have a support system or they do not believe in themselves. I tell students there is power in positive thinking and a whole new world outside of his/her comfort zone. Fear is typically an obstacle for students ~ they are outside their comfort zone and struggle to feel comfortable.

I believe you have hit it right on the head. As an instructor, it is important to get each student to believe that they can do it and help them find that spot where they can be successful

I agree with your statement Clarine. Also, we as instructors are given the opportunity to expand our instructional methods, when working with a diverse representation of students.

It is a win-win situation. It does make the instructor feel as if he or she has made a tremendous accomplishment. It also helps the student to feel that an achievement has been reached and he or she is capable of doing many great things. Therefore, everyone is happy and content.

I find the students with learning disabilities increases my teaching methods as I strive to find new ways to teach information. To me teaching is really about being a conduit for the students' "on-switch”, how the student is wired to receive information. Helping the student find their blueprint for learning will give them the foundation to build whatever they wish to manifest.
