We did that all the time in Organic Chemistry in college. It really helped us to memorize our reactions. It was also a good technique to use in Biochemistry.
Mnemonics are common in the healthcare arena, and helpful when teaching HCP students. They learn to use them as memory enhancers and become good at creating them.
I frequently use mnemonics- I encourage groups to come up with their own and then share with the class. It is a win-win situation, because they discuss and create memories.
