Games and simulations

Fun and simulation really keeps student involved in learning. After seen what shown they try on their own and with some trial and errors they build confidence and are able to do it.

Simulation works well when attempting to reinforce what students have learned in lecture. I really see much more understanding when lectured topics compliment lab. I think simulation makes for better understanding....

Chasity,

I agree & it's just a matter of deciding if it's better to lecture first or conduct the activity first.

Most of my students are visual learners. Just a lecture will not keep the students involved in the subject. I often start with an activity, this allows students to grasp a basic idea of the subject. Then I cover the subject in-depth. Once they understand it, I do another activity where they demonstrate the ability to perform the assigned task.

Miyuki,
this is a great strategy. I have found that starting with activities is a great way to expose the students to the concept & help them be "off balance" so they are more open to the learning.

Getting up and moving around during simulations also help keep the students focused and awake.

I use the games to assess the material learned. The games are fun, they reinforce the material covered and help me to identify areas that I need to work on in improving delivery of the course content. Placing students in teams for the games supports the learning process, builds comraderie and ultimately play a factor in retention efforts.
