Gen Ed class testing

General education assessments should include the identification of students' ability to do critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication. I teach Sociology, which is a gen ed class & the exams include the assessment of the basic academic skills of reading, writing, and computation.

This is especially true in math Marlene. Problem solving is the conversion of written language to the lanuage of symbols (math). Critical thinking and deconstructing sentences into symbols is cruical for nearly all of mathematical thought.

I too teach math and when I try and use multiple choice instead of simple completion, the students take twice as long with their tests.

Multiple choice are ideal, however, I find that students only memorize key terms and have difficulty applying the concepts. Essay questions work well for some subjects.
