Bridging the gap

If you are having trouble bridging the gap between the front of the classroom and the students in their seats...what are some effective ways of constructing that bridge?

Hi Bre,
Much of the gap depends on how instructors present themselves. If they hand onto the lectern or sit behind their desk while lecturing there will be a gap.
Movement is a great way to bridge the gap. Move to the students. If possible set the students in a horseshoe shape and stand in the middle. This takes the back row out of the picture. All students are in the front row.
Another is to break the students into groups for an activity. You can walk among the groups helping to reduce the gap.
Make sure to speak to each student as they come in and get settled. This helps them know you know they are there and that they have had a point of contact with them.
The social aspect of teaching is a big factor in student success. Making them feel comfortable in the class and respected for their abilities will go far in bridging the gap.
Good luck!
Gary
