teaching the teacher

I am the new instructor trainer on my campus so I am dealing with a lot of instructors with long developed bad habits. How do you change the habits without breaking the spirit?

Hi Jesse,
Change can only occur in small ways. Develop an individual development plan for each instructor. Do this with them so they have buy in. Then target what you see as the most serious problem they are having and help them identify how they are going to change the habit or method they are using. Give them ideas and have them use their creativity in how they will make the changes. This way you are not seen as ordering them to teach a different way but you are there to help make their teaching more effective and easier.

Is there an option of having instructors observe other instructors' lectures? I know sometimes just seeing the way someone else interacts with a class can be eye-opening.

Hi Manda,
Good point. Observing other instructors can be valuable in helping to learn new strategies for presenting and instructional planning.
