students get tired and bored having a sencond back up plan can hep engage them in the material

Sure, when whatever was planned is not working (for whatever reason), we really have a duty to be sensitive to that and interject something different to keep students engaged, involved, and mentally participating. There are dozens of ways to achieve that, from very simple, to more comprehensive methods.

Having a back-up plan allows for students to know that you care about making sure they understand the material. It shows that the instructor can adapt to their learning needs. Students are also given multiple opportunities and methods for learning the material.

Sometimes, students are just not into participating. That's when we can be creative and do some activities that are fun, interesting, and involving the whole class. Soon, everyone is engaged, hopefully having fun, and achieving effective student learning outcomes.

For each unit or learning objective to be achieved instructors need to have a variety of hands-on or group activities available for students to participate in. A change of delivery methods 'mid-class session can also help to re-engage and re-energize students especially when they can relate it to required job skills.

I think students get distracted by all kinds reasons, and usually it doesn't take much to reengage. Sometimes, more specific action is needed though. I agree job-related focus is effective.
