Testing

Testing; there has to be a base line of evaluation. Without evaluation we may not determine if the student has the understanding of the material needed to move forth. Although some times the testing might need to be more of hands on test verse a written test because of learning styles. Learning style and testing style do carry hand in hand.

Hi Richard:
In a well written curriculum, all testing would be related to the student learning outcomes (SLO's) for the lesson topic. So, the "baseline" is the SLO. Each SLO should be clearly taught, presented, demonstrrated, or practiced. Then, the test is comprised of material established at the outset in the SLO.

One perspective to ponder.

testing with a part thats hands on and written would be good to asses the students knowledge from the course

Hi David:
Yes, hands on testing is good. Many instructors have difficulty defining a fair rating or grading scale however. When the task is clearly stated at the beginning, and the instructor assures that essential material has been covered, it should not be too difficult to come up with a fair and applicable grading scale.

testing should be used for evaluation of material retention.

Hi Mark:
Yes, retention of information is a good outcome for testing. There can also be testing for analysis and application, where the recall of information is not being assessed but the the student is required to do some critical thinking.

Of course there are many types of testing. You have online testing, verbal, and written. You do want to make sure your student is some what prepared for tests. Please don't feed them to the dogs. How would you feel being unprepared giving the test?

Hi Rochelle:
If we been effective in presenting the course objective and met the student learning objectives, making the test from these measures should assure we're being fair and complete in assessing the student, regardless of the they method we choose to assess.
