This module was helpful for emphasizing the importance of iteration. It can be easy to fall into the same routine with lectures, but prioritizing feedback from students is important. I tend to iterate on my slides and will continue to iterate more.

This module furthered the idea that alternating between forms of interactive online communication can help with class engagement. It also discussed some troubleshooting techniques when encountering technical issues. I intend to utilize these in upcoming lectures.

This module highlighted the effectiveness of breakout rooms for me. I hadn't quite utilized those or polls. I usually focus on discussion stemming from open ended questions. This gave me some additional tools to improve class engagement. I intend to apply breakout rooms and polls to my upcoming lectures.

I've learned that utilizing a variety of content and breaking things into smaller sections can help increase engagement from students. Also, establishing a culture of participation early on can be crucial for maintaining that kind of environment later into the course.

I feel like keeping communication open is the most important so that students know they can reach out to me as needed and aren't afraid to let me know what is going on, when I notice an absence I reach out and make sure they know we are here to help.

One of my biggest takeaways from this module is that effective online communication requires intentionality, empathy, and an understanding of how written messages influence student engagement and retention. While technology provides opportunities to communicate with students more efficiently, the quality of those interactions ultimately determines whether students feel supported, connected, and valued. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on relational writing and the Online Human Touch (OHT) model because they provide practical strategies for building meaningful relationships with students in virtual environments.

One of my biggest takeaways from this module is that technology can significantly strengthen student engagement and retention, but its effectiveness ultimately depends on how intentionally we use it to build meaningful relationships. I particularly appreciated the discussion of the retention technology paradox and the importance of balancing high-tech strategies with high-touch approaches. Institutions can invest in sophisticated systems to monitor student engagement and identify potential barriers, but those tools have limited value if they are not accompanied by timely, personalized outreach and meaningful support.

One of my biggest takeaways from this module is that online education has evolved from an alternative instructional format into an essential component of higher education. As online learning opportunities continue to expand, institutions must recognize that flexibility and convenience alone are not enough to support student success. We must also understand who our online students are, the responsibilities they balance, and the skills they need to navigate virtual learning environments successfully.

I particularly appreciated the discussion of post-traditional learners and the distinction between students who work and employees who study. In my role overseeing academic support services and student… >>>

One of my biggest takeaways from this module is that student retention is not solely determined by individual student characteristics or circumstances. Institutional behaviors, campus climate, and the quality of relationships between students and institutional personnel play an equally important role. I particularly appreciated Vincent Tinto's emphasis on institutional responsibility for student retention and the concept of the working alliance as a foundation for meaningful student engagement.

One of my biggest takeaways from this module is that accessibility should be a foundational component of course design rather than something addressed after a student encounters a barrier. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on Universal Design and the importance of creating accessible instructional materials from the beginning. While accommodations are essential, proactively designing accessible courses can reduce the need for individual adjustments and create a more equitable learning experience for everyone.
