Every student or class, at some point may need a break -whether for bad weather on the drive into class, hard economic news, information overload. Looking for signs that may indicate a break is needed, before additional material is covered, can be as important as covering the last two headlines in a PowerPoint.

I've come to find that informal conversation with students before or after class gleans great information about the student's motivation for learning.

I learned from this course segment that there are  primary and secondary needs involved with a student's success. Bothe of these play a vital role in understanding how most successfully lead a student toward meeting his or her goal.

Assignments where students have to struggle and be motivated to solve a problem, can be shown by the teacher their progress, This results in increased motivation for higher levels of achievement.

I learned student empowerment can be used to the teacher's advantage. I am not computer or phone  tech savy and I often ask my students to help me with a computer or phone problem. This does empower them to increase communication and engage with me if they have questions.

Listening to the student and finding out what they need from me to accomplish their goals. Then I can provide that information so they can accomplish theirgoals and be successful.

I learned that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can both play an important role in helping adult students succeed. I think connecting assignments to students' personal interests and career goals, while also providing encouragement and positive feedback, can help keep them engaged. In my courses, I try to provide teaching moments and relate various things in the assignment to a real world example.

I learned that giving adult learners more freedom in their learning can help them feel more involved and take responsibility for their progress. I think it's important to find a balance between letting students explore their own ideas and providing enough structure and guidance, especially when teaching some of the technical skills that build on each other.

I learned that creating a welcoming learning environment goes beyond the physical classroom, which is why clear communication, organized materials, and setting expectations early are important in our online environment. Making students feel comfortable when asking questions goes a long way.

Aligning extrinsic and intrinsic motivators is the combination that will make you successful with adult students. If they dont have one of those two motivating factors, they won't be engaged. The two factors have to be approached holistically.
