Accreditation Requirement

Schools have the option to be accredited by the Ohio Board. It is important to inform students if your institution is accredited or not.

Student Services

Student services provides assictance to students throughout their program experience at the institution and may vary from school to school. For exanple, some schools may offer student housing for students in need of a place to stay while enrolled in their program whereas others do not provide this service. It is not a requirement to offer housing to those who request it.

Financial Aid and Tuition Assistance

If the institution you work for supports Title IV financial aid programs, you must inform the prospective student of all of his/her options regarding this information. It is important to be knowledgeable of such programs to be more effective in helping the student.

The Importance of a Resource Notebook

Starting a resource notebook for the instituion of which you are employed is very important for several reasons. Not only will it help you keep organized and updated on current rules and regulations but you will also stay informed of your institution's policies as well.

New to Admissions

I am new to admissions and am beyond estatic to work in the department. I have experienced a lot going through my education experience and getting my degree. I can not wait to relate my experience to future students objections. This role does not seem difficult but you need to know an abundance of information and watch for small details. My goal is to stay in touch with my future students; I know if I made my certain objections work with schooling that my students can as well. Sometimes they just need that fire lit and for someone to push them!

Accreditation

Accreditation is a hot topic for most students so it is a good idea to know what accreditation you have and what the accrediting bodies do and what programs they accredit.

Working together

It is crucial to work together with other departments to make sure that you understand what their role is. This will make a smoother, more seamless experience for your students.

Enrollment Agreements

It is good to personally review the enrollment agreements from time to time and to make sure that a student has read them thoroughly prior to signing. Although we go over the agreement with the student, it is vital they know to take the information home and read through it and that it is a legal contract.

Transfer credits

Sometimes it is a challenge when a potential student inquires as to whether or not their credits will transfer to another school. It is in their best interest to remind them they need to check with receiving schools regarding the acceptance of transfer credits. While they don't always like that answer, this course offers a great reminder why it is important for us not to make assumptions or generalizations.

Helping our students

The best way to help our students is to be involved; meaning understanding other areas such as marketing, student services, and financial aid. Without this knowledge we will not be able to serve our students in the capacity which is needed.

Knowledge

Knowledge is the number one key in remaining compliant and also provide positive and informative interactions with prospective students.

Fees and enrollment forms

It is very important that when completing an admissions overview/meeting, that the enrollment agreement is discussed in detailed and reviwed with the student giving them the opportunity to ask any questions. Also, providing an overview of what can be found in the catalogue and how it can be a helpful tool for the student while they are attend any specific program.

Keeping up with changes

It is important to keep up with changes via the department of ed as well as other governing bodies. In my case because our school is regulated by several bodies it is important to understand and remain compliant at all times which each governing insituition. Keeping a binder and or folder in outlook of important documents is very helpful

Accreditation

I had this reversed. I thought the state approval was first in sequence since Accrediting bodies usually cover such large areas.

marketing

It was refreshing to see the vast amount of advertising methods that prospective students have access to. It gives us an opportunity to reach the masses as opposed to targeting one specific demographic.

Refund policies

I didn't realize these were regulated by the state. I was under the impression that it was federal since it seems to be kickback from over payment due to what they qualified for by completing the FAFSA.

Counselors vs. Agents

I didn't fully understand the difference between the two when used in an educational capacity. The explanations definitely shed light.

Student Services verses Career Services

Student services at your school may offer very beneficial resources for students. Resources that may include child care near the campus, tutoring available to students. etc. Career Services may provided career counseling, education on the importance of "soft skills" that should be noted during the interview process, as well as job [placement. Be sure to understand if your institution offers job placement or career counseling only.

Admission Advisor

Hello, I work for a small school. I am excited to see how things go.

Honesty is the best policy

In my career, I have always used this philosophy and it has taken me far. People respect a simple, "I do not know the answer, but I will research and get back with you." This comment demonstrates integrity and the individual question is important enough to warrant research. I have found that people appreciate this and are willing to wait for you to get back with them with the correct information.
