Developing An Evaluation System

Enshuring that the material (I.e. homework, labs) properly evaluate the student enough so that the class work grades properly reflect the test grades.

Methods to develop backup plans

We will run a bulb preservation day where instructors are encouraged to turn off the projector and use the printed material and the boards to run the class. This is good practice for the day the bulb burns out or the cumputers crash, the instructors know the material is all about getting them to pass this knowledge on.

Selecting media for your classes

The first reason for most would be convience, but a close secone would have to be what method intrest the instructor. If we can not become intrested in the delivery method then how can we expect the student to stay interested.

Preparing to Manage Your Class

Untill I read the diffrent types of instructors I had not realy thought of what kind of instructor I was. Untill then I didnt realize that I was in fact the Peacemaker. Now having an understanding of this I have somthing to base my streangths and weeknesses off of. I you dont have that understanding then how are you ever going to be able to corectly build up your weeknesses?

quizzes vs final exam

I just completed a class where the quizzes were in short answer format and the final exam was in multiple choice. The students were accustomed to receiving partial credit on the quizzes and when the multiple choice final came around, the students were in an uproar. They disputed several questions in an attempt to get partial credit to receive a better score. They really didn't like the multiple choice format and blamed me for their poor performance. What are your reccomendations?

workshop hours

A collegue of mine suggested that I offer workshop hours, just a few a session. So, I've decided to try this, scheduled for tomorrow (in culinary), for students to make the recipes they do not feel they have grasped. I was surprised about the number of students who plan to attend, which tells me that I might be stuffing to much material in the lesson plan each day.

ppts

I overheard some students the other day complaining that their teacher did not use ppts at all and that they "had to take notes the old fashioned way." The students were upset that they couldn't just print out the ppts and have instant notes. The younger generation of students, it seems, has come to expect this type of media in classes. It's a balance between satisfying their preferred media for learning and changing things up a bit by using white board, demos, etc. It's challenging to satisfy all the students in class with their preferred delivery of media, especially when there is a tremendous variety in age.

"Clean" Structure...

Adult students need stability, structure and a "clean" learning environment. I do not refer to "clean" as necessarily a lack of dirt or mess in the physical classroom, what I mean is that they need everything they do during that class time to be crisp and consistent. Adult students appreciate the instructor if they do not waste time, breaks are held consistently and learning takes place. The best instructors are the most organized and the most detailed about how each day is broken down for the students, especially in longer classes. I have found over the years that you will have much fewer complaints with "clean" instructors. If a students feels they are with someone who is in control, is well prepared and provides this type of learning environment, they will respect and appreciate the instructor's efforts to teach and share information.

Assesments

Making sure that the assignments reach a broad crowd of students. And that the wheights of the grades are in the right areas for the educational outcome.

Extra Credit on Tests

I have found that if I add a question to a test that has the designation "EXTRA CREDIT", the students that do not really need the extra points will attempt the question. Those students who could use the extra points look at the question and feel "...if it is extra credit it must be extra hard. Too hard for me" and they skip the question. My solution is to simply put one or two extra questions on a test and calculate the percentage score not using those questions in the base line score. Example...52 questions on a test with each one being worth 2 points. This translates to a perfect paper (52 correct) scoring 104%. This way all the student try every question. PS. I teach math and this is also a learning sitution for the class. They get to calculate their own percentage grade.

Prepare

While teaching a butchers yield I have had to come up with different approaches and when all fails I have allowed students that understand the material to try a hand at teaching the students that dont understand I have found that just another voice or face can sometimes redirect the students frustration and allow them to learn the material.

laughter

Incorporate picture or text in your slide show that is relative and provokes a laugh can liven up a bunch, reduce stress, and seems to recapture attention.

Ownership

I have the the ability to give my class creative freedom, and have found by doing so that they take ownership and produce better products at the same time tweeking there ideas and either showing them tricks of the trade or more creative ways to present the product.

Evaluation Systems

What has been covered in this module really says it all.

Troubleshooting: Instructional Strategies

I always take inventory of my student's background and learning styles so I can modify or make adjustments to my delivery of instruction. This helps maximize their learning potential.

PowerPoint, Demos and Hands-on

I like to use this three step combination of instruction: PowerPoint - the student's cognitive senses are stimulated by demonstrating the theory behind the task. Instructional demonstrations - the student now sees and understands the link between the theory and performance of the task. Hands-on - now the student can physically apply what he has learned to perform the task himself.

Being prepared...with visuals.

I find that with my art clsses most students learn visually, so I make sure that I have visual exmples to help support my handouts.

Variety of Assessments

Beneficial for the students. Some students enjoy and excel at research. Others are more comfortable with studying and take a test. Practical testing truly confirms that learning has occured. This will give all types of students the opportunity to be successful.

Being Prepared to Teach

Having all necessary materials to teach, employing latest methods, knowing yourself and getting to know your students will help you be a successful instructor.

Student Self-Evaluation

I like to have my students evaluate their dishes when they bring them up to me and talk about what they like about it and what they can improve on. I think this is a great way to help them self-assess on how they can improve individually. After they have finished, I then evaluate their product and always end with something positive about their product.
