Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Get students involved

Ask your students what they want out of the class. Find out where they would like to go if a field trip is an option, and who they would like to see come and speak to the class as far as a guest speaker. You would be amazed how many students have relatives or friends that work in the same or similar field that they are going to school for and you can utilize their contacts for a guest speaker or perhaps a field trip.

Powerpoint by Death

I try to never use the powerpoint slides from the publisher, they are totally disconnecting from the way I use adult learning principles in he class. I did like the way that the Harvard faculty use the whiteboard and I am a big fan of flipcharts to recognize students comments.

Attitude=reception=learning/retention or not

Chefs, It never ceases to amaze me the negative and condescending attitudes many chef instructors bring into the class room. Many chefs in the field and class room have bad attitudes and pomp us approaches. This yields little room for learning and retention of instruction; be it demonstration or theory based on their pomp us and condescending attitude towards students or future culinarians. Students in any given field will embrace your views, be mindful of your instruction and retain what your preaching if you just humble your approach and talk to them as humans on their level. Humble yourself, your approach, and you will be amazed at the students retention of your given topic/course of study.

understanding your strengths

There are several assessment tools to assist the instructor in understanding what they do best with groups of peoples...my school uses Insights. I have taken and am certified in MBTI, DISC, and a host of others. This type of activity would be best served in an all faculty meeting

Creating an Evaluation System

When evaluating students, I feel an instructor must use a variety of methods such as multiple choice, true or false, matching choice, and essay questions to make sure the student are being assessed in different ways.

Troubleshooting Instructional Strategies

I feel that if an instructor is having issues delivering materials to the class, having anonymous report card given back is a great way to assess what is happening. Especially when students don’t feel as though they’re being targeted.

Selecting Instructional Delivery Methods

I found it interesting to read through this course that the maximum number of points should be five on one slide for power point presentations. I guess it makes since that too many points can make things appear cluttered.

Firm But Fair

I pride myself on being firm but fair. That is how a live my life. I have young children and manage people as well as a classroom. When you are constantly trying to accommodate people it creates more problems than you ever dreamed of. Establish an understanding early on and remain true to your commitment to the student and they will respect you more for it.

students

finding the correct evaluation method is good for instructors. they should use a variety to meet the expectations or learning methods of all students.

students

make sure you are always observing your class, getting feedback and making real time corrections to your class.

delivery

make it fun and students will be engaged and learn.

be organized

always be on time and organized, it will make the class smoother ans students will begin to gain respect for the instructors role.

Varied Skill Levels

I find this job especially challenging when it comes to the varied Skill/Knowledge level of my students. At any given time I could be teaching to an audience which includes students with a Masters Degree sitting next to a student that has a GED. To find that pace or flow that keeps the advanced student interested without losing the struggling students can be a challenge indeed.

Evaluations

The most important aspect of assessments is on day one “ensure the student clearly understands how their performance is going to be evaluated”. Once the student understands the standards – it is up to the student to earn the grade. This allows each student the opportunity to develop their time management skills and demonstrate their professional responsibilities.

Be prepared and organized

I believe you should not waste the students’ time. This is why I try to ensure everything is set up and ready to go 30 minutes prior to the class start time. This gives me the time to review the lesson plan, power point slides, handouts, and ensure the all the materials are in place for practical exercises. The students stay motivated when they see you are organized and prepared to teach.

bringing in the real world

I find that giving the students actual cases to correlate the new information with helps a ton. Plus they love to hear the stories as well, they listen with excitement hoping to someday experience these cases.

The "Power" of Power Point

I really enjoy creating Power Point slide presentations for the students. I try to make them as informative, interesting and entertaining as possible. I will often add some tasteful humor which catches the students off-guard and is always very well received, and breaks up the monotony of lecture. When I have the students do their presentations for class, they always add a little humor in their P P presentations as well. Must be working!

So much harder

I find on the rare occasion that I am not fully prepared for class, that it is so much harder and stressful to manage the session. Looking back, almost always, whatever kept me from being "on my game" was not close to being worth the extra work involved in "winging-it". Be on your game. The students deserve it! They are who we are here for!

Power Point Presentations

I think these are valuable tools for the students and have learned important rules in regard to setting up power point presentations that will keep the students engaged.

Pre-testing adults

For a Technology School, pre-testing adults is a touchy situation. If the pre-tests are too hard then you will loose a prospective student. If the pre-tests are too easy they may be setting them up for failure. Ron
